When you should make an exit?

Sounds like an easy question right? Believe me, IT ISN’T.

I was reading this one blog from Manas today which felt really relatable to me and I quote,

One thing I have seen people do again and again is just because they don’t like situation X and want to get out of X, they assume that anything will be better than X, and jump to situation Y. They don’t separate exiting from X with selecting Y over other potential options they have. They just jump in Y. Example: just because your current job sucks, you don’t need to jump at the first escape opportunity available. You might face the same problems in the new job. So think carefully.

Entry and exit are totally different decisions. Don’t combine both.

This is absolutely true, especially in the startup ecosystem. Everyone is fantasizing about working in a startup these days but what they really want to do is work at a growing startup. When asked, Which startup do you want to work at? Names like Cred, ShareChat, OnePlus, Swiggy, and a few more unicorns will pop out.

First, these are not really startups anymore but they’re pretending to keep the culture as a startup to stay away from that corporate tag. Nothing wrong with that though, with teams getting bigger you need to build a system.

But, what really intrigues me is the fact that nobody wants to stay at a startup standing on the edge of a cliff. Why? RISK! Sounds like a valid reason right.

Before I draw any conclusion here (which I’m not qualified for), Let me take you through what you should consider while taking a job at a not-so-popular startup.

Few metrics that matter:

  • Salary
  • Personal Growth
  • Job Security
  • Team/Culture/Idea

Just because your current company is not doing so well you don’t need to quit is the worst suggestion here. I’d rather suggest quitting if you’re coming on to that conclusion after considering multiple points.

You must agree with the above points mentioned but one important factor that should be your key decision maker is

  • TIME

Is this thing is really something worth spending my time on?

Take a paper and write answers to these questions. I’m not saying that one is more important than the other but once you’re done considering these points, you’ll be able to make up your mind. At least, I did.
